Geforce 940M: Find out if your video card is good for current games

By Computing
NVIDIA mid-range video card for notebooks, the 940M ends up appearing on the way of those who are searching the market for a laptop with a good deal of graphics processing.

But how far does Nvidia's intermediate board go in the face of heavy gaming? Are there better options in Brazil? Does it make sense to buy a notebook with the 940M for gaming? Next, you will learn more about the technical specifications of the board, learn about their performance in games and know their weaknesses to find out if the purchase is worth it.

Specifications and performance

The Geforce GT 940M is an intermediate video card from Nvidia for notebooks. As a result of the Maxwell architecture, this GPU has 384 CUDA cores and draws attention to its low power consumption, as it only registers 25 watts of TDP, a dissipation rate equivalent to that of the U (Core i5 6200U and 7200U and Core i7 6500U And 7500U).

The 940M runs with a clock rate ranging from 1072 to 1176 MHz, reaching a speed range that should guarantee you performance in excess of that of the integrated Intel GPUs on the processors that usually accompany it. This increased ease makes the board a good choice for those who need to use more graphically intensive applications or rely on parallel processing power.
But what about games?

In terms of games, Geforce 940M will generally outperform Intel's GPUs. That means more ability to run games, but does not mean that the Nvidia card will have enough performance for your games to run at high resolutions and maximum settings. Launched in 2015, the 940M may find it harder to play in newer games, but should have the ability to tackle slightly older celebrity titles, since less graphic graphics configurations: the 940M is not a gamer card.

Several benchmarks show this trend. GTA V, for example, with resolution set to HD and with more modest graphics configurations, it can run with optimum performance, beating the 55 FPS.

Weaknesses

With so many qualities (economy, relatively capable to run games and superior to Intel boards), what is the Geforce 940M bad? What are your shortcomings?

There are two "problems" that help to explain bottlenecks and GPU difficulty, even with high processing speed (1176 MHz maximum), in demanding games: the card communicates with its dedicated memory via a narrow 64-bit To the amount of data needed to make a game run at maximum and high resolution settings.

In addition, the RAM itself paired with the Geforce 940M is slow: the board uses DDR3, which is a poor standard for the high demands of a game.

Variations of the 940M

Consumers need to be aware of a variation of the 940M: the Geforce 940MX. This review of Nvidia's GPU is basically the same as the brand developed in partnership with Microsoft for use in the first generation of the Surface Book. It is up to 30% higher than 940M when paired with GDDR5 type RAM.

If you're in the market for a dedicated video card notebook, and the tie is between two models, one with 940M and the other with 940MX, choose the second option - especially if the graphics memory is GDDR5: the performance leap will be Expressive and you can risk running even newer games with good graphics configurations, infeasible in sister with DDR3 from the board.

Notebooks with the board

Asus , Acer , Samsung and Lenovo currently have notebooks on the market that use the 940M. The price range for notebooks revolves at $ 3,500 for the best settings. The Asus X555, however, stands out: it can be found for $ 2,500 and features the 940M GPU from Nvidia. For slightly higher prices, you can find the Expert line from Samsung.

What about 940MX? At the moment, only Dell offers notebooks equipped with this card, all using GDDR5. This is the Inspiron 7000 line, which, however, has prices that start at the house of $ 3,500 and beat the $ 4,800 for the best possible configuration with the fastest GPU.
