The  NIOH is the new action RPG produced by Team Ninja . Available exclusively for PS4 , the release brings perfect combat mechanics, high difficulty and ambiance set in the Japanese feudal period. Check out, below, the complete review with all impressions about the game.

On the way to war

Nioh's journey is led by warrior William in the Sengoku period in 1600, a generation of civil wars motivated by the reunification of Japan. The protagonist is inspired by a real figure, William Adams, the first English navigator to arrive in Japan - being , Too, the first Western samurai.

Despite allied historical references to his concept of Japanese fantasy, Nioh's focus is not the plot. The plot is filled with neat cutscenes, especially in the transition of areas and confrontations against bosses, however there are no in-depth explanations about the characters. The main antagonist, for example, is poorly exploited and appears punctually.

The character begins the adventure imprisoned in a security tower in London. From there, he must find a way out of the place to fulfill his initial goal of arriving in Japan. Upon landing in Japanese lands, the hero realizes that there is something wrong besides the wreckage of the war, since the villages are taken by Yokai, supernatural creatures of Japanese folklore.

If you missed, do it again

Nioh has, without a doubt, a great reference when it comes to gameplay: the Dark Souls franchise. The similarity between Nioh and the From Software series is precisely the high tone of difficulty. As in Dark Souls and Bloodborne, fighting requires quick reflexes and full mastery of Ki's movement and control - which replaces vigor - even in duels with common enemies.

The great difference of Nioh is that it proposes a system of combat more dynamic, with clear influences of the genre hack and slash. Battles call for a balance between speed and absolute precision, but you still have to study rival behavior to try to figure out the right moment to attack and defend.

The controls are very responsive and accessible to any player. Everything works well, including the camera, which always comes to be a serious problem in titles of the genre. To diversify the combat, William can opt for equipment of different cadences, such as axes, katanas, swords and spears.

Another characteristic to emphasize is the possibility of adjusting the combat posture between the low, medium and high positions. The plan of the weapon guarantees more flexibility, since the enemies are vulnerable to certain types of posture. A colossal demon, for example, naturally slower, will suffer more damage from light weapons, with blows from above.

Structure that encourages repetition

Nioh seeks to be inspired by the more robust mechanics of current RPGs by bringing a deep level of customization, a skill tree, and the attribute distribution system. The number of items available to the character really impresses as well as the wide variety of weapons, helmets, protections and items.

Unlike games like Dark Souls, whose open world is fully connected, Nioh bets on an old formula already known in videogames: the structure in phases. When you complete a mission, the protagonist returns to the map, and from there, you can define a new destination.

The phase selection format makes the experiment less immersive. On the other hand, it allows activities to be repeated over and over again, be it one of dozens of secondary missions or any of the goals related to the story.

The items, distributed in levels of rarity - common, unusual and unique - are generated randomly in trunks and downed enemies in the best Diablo style. This means that revisiting areas to acquire equipment and accumulate points may be a great strategy for those who are stagnant in history and can not make progress because of the high level of difficulty.

Welcome help

To make the casual player friendly experience, Nioh also has an online mode which can help other samurai in areas against bosses. William can summon up another fighter with the help of the item "Ochoko's Cup", which can be obtained by defeating the spirits of defeated players.

Once the visitor to the world dies, your character will have to continue on stage alone. Nioh's online feature may be confusing at first, but it becomes highly addictive from the moment it is fully understood.

Nioh: Feudal Japan is well represented in the game

Feudal Japan well represented

Visually speaking, Nioh's setting is, without hesitation, one of the finest representations of feudal Japan ever seen in the games. The scenarios are caprichados and stuffed with characteristic figures, and the mythological creatures give a show apart in the question of creativity.

The character visits villages, Buddhist temples, castles and other incredible environments that enhance Japanese architecture. The negative point is due to phase recycling. This is because it is common to visit the same map two or three times with small changes, such as limited paths and different weather - which alternates between sun and rain. The reused elements slightly break the immersion.

On the technical side, Nioh also stands out for dynamic lighting and shading. The scenarios, for the most part, have low light, so the effects and particles become more visible. It is important to remember that the game has a graphics configuration tab in the menu itself. It is possible to lock the game at 1080p and 60 fps or choose, if it is on the PS4 Pro , for a higher resolution, which works as an upscale at 4K.

Conclusion

Nioh is a big competitor to the post of best PS4 exclusive and arguably one of the most difficult games ever released for the platform. With brutal combat, setting in the Japanese feudal period and systems that encourage repetition, the title has a vice factor that can consume hundreds of hours of your free time.
