Facebook builds helicopter to take internet in crisis areas
By Technology
Revealed during the F8 conference in the United States, Facebook is developing a small helicopter to take the Internet to hard-to-reach areas. Called "Tether-tenna," Facebook commented that the model will provide "instant" infrastructure in "moments of crisis."
"It's geared to situations where rapid deployment is needed, as it happens during natural disasters, when infrastructures are damaged or destroyed, and some fiber cables still work," said Yael Maguire of Facebook Connectivity Lab. Capable of being implemented immediately and operating for months to bring connectivity in emergencies."
To function, the helicopter will connect to the local fiber and electricity cable. Then it climbs a few hundred meters straight to transmit the signal. "Tether-tenna" is in the early stages of development and there is not yet a set date for it to start operating officially.
