Smartphones Battery Lose Capacity

Buy a new smartphone or notebook, if you marvel at the capacity of your battery in the first few months of use and suddenly realize that the same charge is no longer "holding back" so much. Have you identified yourself with the situation? For this mystery which until then was somewhat hazy to science may have been unraveled now: American researchers have finally been able to identify the chemical reactions that cause the problem.

The meticulous analysis was conducted by the United States Department of Energy, which regulates the country's energy and nuclear safety policies. Scientists say they have discovered one of the mechanisms that cause this reduction in battery capacity - and may be able to reverse the process.

The explanation

Rechargeable lithium batteries work with ions in an electrolyte solution, which move between two electrodes and thus create the flow of electrons to power the device. Therefore, what defines the capacity of the battery is simply the volume of lithium ions able to make this "trip" while charging the device, and also while the battery is discharging.

Studying this process, the researchers found that the material that makes up the electrodes ends up breaking with the time of use. The result is the influence of metal ions (such as manganese) floating freely through this system, causing a reaction that interferes with the action of lithium ions. And the more the device is in use after this damage, the lithium ions find it increasingly difficult to work properly, reducing the capacity of the battery to maintain its charge at the same time as before.

This correlation between manganese and lithium ions was still unknown by science, and according to Daniel Araham, co-author of the study, "now that we know the mechanisms behind this sabotage of lithium ions and the decrease in capacity [Of the battery], we can find methods to solve the problem ".
